Influence Conference

In the past year or so, I slowly became more aware of the Influence Network as friends posted about it. Basically, it’s an online community for creatively-minded Christian women who understand that their words (and often blogs) have power and influence for Christ.

The Influence Network is hosting a conference in a couple weeks. I hadn’t planned on going, but when I realized a) it’s in my city, b) I’m not going to be anywhere else (Africa!) at that time and c) I definitely need community and learning opportunities and introvertedness-stretching, we looked at our budget and decided it would work!

I am the queen of online-only relationships. It’s seems I generally follow people’s blogs or Twitter accounts before I actually meet them in person. This makes meeting frequently awkward, but here’s the secret: I pretend I don’t know their names. This conference will allow me to learn from women I admire, and I’m determined to just go ahead and admit how much I know about their lives.Β

Sometimes I’m put off by conferences and online communities and all that.Β This, though, seems to perfectly fit what I need and want to be learning right now, as I begin to see this story God is telling with my life. I’m really looking forward to it.

So, off I’ll go downtown in a couple weeks. (Hopefully wearing a scarf, because it’s been so hot out and hotel conference rooms are usually cold, right?)

I’m certainly bringing my journal, too. I’ve rediscovered a love of writing and processing and self-reflection as I’ve been forced to slow down and focus on God in new ways this past year.

  • Hello from a fellow Indiana blogger! I’m also a tad bit of an introvert so you’re not alone. πŸ™‚ It will be very surreal to meet so many women I’ve admired and been inspired by online in person. Hope we can meet as well! πŸ™‚

  • i’m so excited to meet you there! i went last year and i felt so overwhelmed and uncomfortable knowing so much about people i actually did not know! but it’s amazing. truly. i’m super glad you’re going. also: i adore your blog πŸ™‚

  • Natalie, I’m so glad you’re coming. I’m an introvert and Indy girl, too.

  • I’m looking forward to learning from women I admire too and hope I don’t get too shy about it all. Hope to meet you in a couple weeks!

  • It can definitely be awkward knowing so much about people you haven’t actually met in real life! I have a few friends I actually forget I’ve never met in person because we’ve built such strong friendships. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with admitting you know things about a person you’ve read on their blog; I know I for one know I lay it all out there and I’m not fazed at all when someone references that! What freaks me out more is when people I know in real life who don’t blog say they read something on my blog. Ha!

I’m not always one for community and conferences and groups of people, either. One of the lessons I’ve been learning through my teens and early 20s is that NO group of people who come together, even if it’s for the gospel, is going to be perfect, and I can’t expect that of them. What I CAN expect is the Lord to be working among that group and within me, working for our good and His glory, slowly redeeming the messes we’ve made of ourselves and our lives. I’m praying that we both come to a better understanding of His purpose in community while we’re at the conference, and that He blows us away with how powerfully the Spirit can move when a few hundred come together for His name.

I hadn’t planned on going at all, either, but suddenly I noticed that it’s not insanely far away (4 hr. drive)….and neither my husband nor I had work scheduled–so we decided to pick up and go! I’m excited for the conference!

  • I’m so excited to meet you in person and crash at your place on Wednesday night!!

  • Hope to meet you at the conference and hear more about your adoption!

  • So. Glad. You’re. Coming. πŸ™‚

  • Yay for scarves! πŸ™‚

  • Hi Natalie! Just wanted to say Hi, nice to meet you…checking out all the ladies on the Influence link-up.
